What were Doyle Brunson’s main hobbies?

Cuáles eran los principales pasatiempos de Doyle Brunson

Doyle Brunson is, without question, the most emblematic figure in modern poker. His nickname, “The Godfather of Poker,” is not a title granted lightly; it summarizes a life dedicated to shaping the game, from his days in the dangerous (illegal) card rooms of Texas to his reign at the most prestigious tables in Las Vegas. His legacy is carved into ten World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets, two consecutive Main Event championships, and the revolutionary book Super System, considered the “Bible of Poker.”

But Brunson was much more than a statistic. While the world watched him read his opponents and accumulate millions in winnings, there was a man whose hobbies and interests were forged by a life of adversity, unwavering faith, and an innate competitiveness that transcended the casino. In this article, we will explore Doyle Brunson’s main hobbies.

The athlete who could have been a legend

Before the world knew Doyle for his cowboy hat and WSOP bracelets, he was a standout player on the basketball courts. Basketball was his primary hobby and passion, as Brunson was a Texas All-State star and later a standout at Hardin-Simmons University. His speed and precision were such that the Minneapolis Lakers (now the Los Angeles Lakers) had their eyes on him and attempted to recruit him, which could have completely changed the course of his life.

Basketball wasn’t just a hobby; it was his identity. Doyle spent hours perfecting his shot and his physical game. However, in 1950, before starting his professional career, Brunson suffered a workplace accident while unloading construction materials at a gypsum factory, resulting in a severe leg injury. The injury was devastating, requiring two years of recovery and leaving him with permanent damage that forced him to use a cane occasionally for the rest of his life. Although the NBA dream died, the competitive spirit of basketball shifted to the cards. Throughout his life, Brunson maintained a voracious interest in the sport, analyzing games with the same depth he used to analyze a hand of Texas Hold’em.

The adrenaline of sports betting

Once the courts were physically out of reach, Doyle Brunson found a substitute for that adrenaline rush in sports betting. Brunson loved American football, baseball, and, of course, basketball. His hobbies away from the poker tables often involved meetings with close friends, such as Chip Reese, to discuss betting lines, handicaps, and player statistics.

For Doyle, betting on sports was an extension of his analytical thinking. It is said that his bets on sporting events could be as large as, or even larger than, the pots he contested at the Bellagio. This hobby kept him connected to the outside world and fed his constant need to “have skin in the game.” It wasn’t just about the money; it was about proving that his judgment of human performance was superior to the market’s.

Golf

Doyle Brunson was an avid golfer for decades. However, in the world of high-stakes Las Vegas players, golf is rarely played for honor alone. “Hustles” or bets on the golf course were Doyle’s favorite pastime.

Golf was one of his favorite competitive passions, along with poker. Bets on the course were common, turning every hole into a psychological and skill-based mini-battle. But his thirst for competition went even further; Brunson used to say that golf was the hardest game in the world because you couldn’t blame anyone but yourself for a bad shot. Doyle spent entire mornings on Las Vegas courses, often under a scorching sun, competing against other poker professionals. These matches were legendary, involving sums of money that would make any PGA professional pale. Golf allowed him to be outdoors and maintain his mobility, while offering an environment where emotional control was as vital as it was at a card table.

Writing

One of Doyle Brunson’s most productive hobbies was writing. Brunson didn’t just play; he also wanted to understand why he played the way he did. He dedicated years of his life to drafting what would become the “Poker Bible”: Super System. This hobby of documenting strategies and anecdotes was not born out of financial need, but from a genuine desire to elevate the level of the game.

Doyle enjoyed the process of structuring thought. In his later years, he became a very active user of social media (especially Twitter and X) and maintained a personal blog. Writing allowed him to reflect on the evolution of the game he helped create. It was his way of staying mentally sharp and connecting with new generations of players who saw him as a mythical figure.

Cinema and western literature

Brunson was a man of Texas, and his cultural tastes reflected that heritage. One of his hobbies was watching movies and reading literature, especially Westerns. Doyle felt a deep connection with stories of outlaws, sheriffs, and the law of the gun, seeing clear parallels to his early days as a “road gambler” when he had to travel with a gun to protect his winnings.

Doyle enjoyed classic films and novels that portrayed the westward expansion. This interest was not merely aesthetic; it was a respect for an era of strict codes of honor and personal courage—values he tried to apply in the modern environment of Las Vegas casinos.

Horse breeding

Rooted in his Texan origins, Doyle Brunson always maintained an interest in rural life and animal husbandry. Although Las Vegas was his home by professional necessity, the concept of the ranch and horses was always his mental refuge. During various stages of his life, he invested time and resources into properties and the appreciation of Quarter Horses.

A man of faith and family

Behind the public figure of the fearsome “Texas Dolly” lived a man of deep faith and family devotion. This aspect of his life was dramatically exposed in 1962. With his wife Louise pregnant with their first child, Brunson was diagnosed with advanced melanoma in his neck. Doctors discovered the cancer had spread and told him he had only a few months to live, hoping only that surgery would keep him alive long enough to meet his baby.

What happened next, Brunson always attributed to a miracle. When he was taken into surgery, the surgeons found no trace of the cancer. In a spontaneous remission that baffled science, the disease had disappeared. Brunson and his wife were convinced it was the result of prayers from Louise’s friends and her contact with Christian healer Kathryn Kuhlman. Shortly after, Louise was also diagnosed with a tumor that vanished just as inexplicably before surgery.

These experiences strengthened a faith that became a central pillar of his private life. Away from the bright lights of Las Vegas, Brunson was a family patriarch. His marriage to Louise lasted over sixty years, until his passing. Together, they raised a family that kept his legacy alive. His son, Todd Brunson, is a professional poker player in his own right, winning a WSOP bracelet in 2005 and forming the first father-son combination to achieve that feat with Doyle. His daughter Pamela also competed in the WSOP. For Brunson, family was his biggest winning bet—a refuge of normalcy and love in the midst of a high-stakes life.
