Main Positions at a Poker Table

Principales Posiciones en una Mesa de Póker

Poker is a game in which the position at the table can significantly influence the strategy and decisions made during the game. Understanding the different positions at a poker table is crucial for any player who wants to improve his game, increase his chances of winning, and succeed in the long run. Below, we will learn about the poker table’s main positions and how each affects the game’s development.

Blinds or early positions

Among the early positions are the Small Blind and the Big Blind.

Small Blind

The Small Blind is the first player to make the first mandatory bet after the flop is called. The Small Blind is difficult because the player must act first in all betting rounds (after the flop). In addition, the player has already contributed a small amount to the pot, which can lead to complicated decisions. In this position, playing with strong hands and avoiding speculative hands is recommended unless the pot is multi-way. It is important to note that some players prefer to be more aggressive to compensate for positional disadvantage. They consider limping or calling instead of raising in certain situations to see the flop at a lower cost.

Big Blind

The Big Blind player makes the second mandatory bet, which sets the minimum bet size. The Big Blind is another problematic position as the player has made a required contribution to the pot and must act first in subsequent betting rounds. However, the player also has the option to see the flop “free” if there are no previous raises. For this position, it is recommended to defend the blind with various hands, especially if players in late positions are trying to steal and be more conservative with marginal hands, but also be willing to defend with strong hands. Using the information obtained during the preflop betting round is recommended to make informed decisions on the flop.

Medium positions

Middle positions include the UTG (Under The Gun) immediately after the Big Blind and the middle positions (MP) between the UTG and the dealer (button).

Under the Gun (UTG)

The “Under the Gun” position is the first to act after the blinds. This is a challenging position as the player must make decisions without information about the other player’s intentions. Generally, playing conservatively in this position is recommended, limiting yourself to strong or premium hands. A recommended strategy in this type of position is to play strong hands, such as high pairs (AA, KK, QQ) and high card combinations (AK, AQ) while avoiding marginal and speculative hands. As for the attitude towards the game, it is recommended to be aware of the image you project by being the first to act.

Intermediate positions (MP)

Intermediate positions are between the first and last positions at the table. At a standard Texas Hold’em table, they are usually the sixth, seventh, and eighth positions after the blinds. These positions are often called MP, MP1, and MP2, respectively.

The middle positions are crucial at poker because they balance early and late positions. Players have the advantage of seeing the action of the early positions from these positions, but they still need to be wary of the late positions, which act after them.

For these positions, the range of playable hands can be expanded to include middle pairs and some speculative hands, such as same-suit connectors. A recommended strategy is to take advantage of the information from the previous actions to adjust the game and be more aggressive with strong hands to win bigger pots.

Late positions

As one moves toward late positions, play becomes more aggressive. Players have more information about their opponents and can adapt their strategies. Late positions include “HiJack” and “Cutoff” (player who acts before the Dealer).

Hijack (HJ)

The “Hijack” is the position before the “Cutoff” and is known to be a position from which more aggressive plays can be made. Players in this position can steal the blinds before players in late positions act. In this position, it is possible to play a wider range of hands, including low pairs and same-suit connectors. Players can also take advantage of the opportunity to steal blinds with aggressive betting and adapt the game based on the reading of the late-position players.

Cutoff (CO)

The “Cutoff” position is the second-best position at the table. Players in this position have a significant advantage, as only one player left in the button position will act after them. This is an ideal position to play aggressively and steal pots. Here, you can play a wide variety of hands, including speculative hands and bluffs, and you can steal blinds frequently with aggressive betting and raising. You should also watch the player on the button to anticipate his moves and adjust accordingly.

Dealer or Button (BTN)

The Dealer or “Button” is the most advantageous position in poker. The player in this position acts last in all betting rounds after the flop, which gives them the advantage of seeing how all the other players act before making a decision. Because of the positional advantage of this position, it is possible to play an extensive range of hands and use the information gained from the opponents’ actions to make informed decisions. This is an advantageous position where you can be aggressive to maximize your profits.
