Key Behaviors of Novice Poker Players

Key Behaviors of Novice Poker Players

Novice poker players (better known as “fishes” or recreational players) exhibit several behaviors that make them vulnerable to more experienced players. In this article, we will share some common behaviors of this type of player:

Passive or Extremely Aggressive Play

Novice players often fall into extremes: some play very passively, limiting themselves to calling bets like good calling stations, while others play aggressively, betting and raising with weak or marginal hands. This lack of balance makes them predictable and easy to exploit.

Experienced players can quickly identify this pattern and adjust their play according to the circumstances: more hands against passive players and being more selective with aggressive players.

Hand Selection

Another common behavior among novice participants is playing with too many hands without discriminating between strong and weak hands. This tends to generate unfavorable situations, complicating their game and increasing their chances of losing.

Novice players often overvalue marginal hands like low pairs or suited connectors. It is important to note that at this point, advanced players wait patiently and attack when they have superior hands, thus capitalizing on poor decisions by novice players.

Lack of Strategy

Novice players generally lack a clear strategy, which makes them predictable. Many players at this level do not understand advanced concepts such as post-flop play, expected value (EV), and proper bankroll management, and make decisions based on feelings rather than rational analysis. Exploiting this weakness involves having a solid strategy, based on mathematics and probability, in order to make optimal decisions in the face of erratic plays by novice players.

Not Taking Table Position into Account

Another common mistake is not considering a position at the poker table. Novice players often make large bets out of position, putting themselves at a disadvantage. On the other hand, professional or experienced players take advantage of this lack of consideration to maximize the value of their strong hands. Controlling position allows us to play more effectively, making big bets in favorable situations and avoiding big losses in disadvantageous situations.

For example, an early position (first seat after a big blind) has certain disadvantages since one acts “before” most players, having less information about their intentions. On the other hand, a late position (dealer button or the position immediately after the button) has the advantage of seeing how all players act “before” making a decision, which offers more flexibility to make certain strategic moves such as stealing blinds and bluffing.

Calling the minimum bet frequently

The habit of calling the minimum bet (limping) is typical of novice players. This shows a lack of aggressiveness and allows more experienced opponents to take control of the hand. Advanced players often isolate these players with preflop raises, forcing them to make tough decisions with marginal hands.

Most poker experts recommend raising or folding rather than calling the bet (limping). This is because raising the bet allows us to control the pot, put pressure on our opponents, and better define the range of hands we will play with.

Key Behaviors of Novice Poker Players

Overvaluing bluffs

Many novice players tend to overpay, especially on hands with flush or straight draws, looking to hit without considering the odds (cost-benefit ratio) to do so profitably.

This lack of understanding of the probabilities involved is an advantage for advanced players, who “bet big” when they have strong hands and bluff less, knowing that newbies will call with longshot draws.

Fast Play

Newbie players tend to play quickly with their strong hands, betting and raising aggressively (fastplay). This limits their check-calling range to weaker hands, making them predictable to more experienced opponents. Taking advantage of this behavior involves “slowplaying” in certain situations to induce bets from newbie players and extract maximum value from their strong hands.

Inconsistent Bet Sizes

Newbie players often fail to measure bet sizes in relation to the pot or simply fail to consider the objectives of their hands. They may be small when they should be betting big or vice versa.

These behaviors make newbie players clear targets for more experienced players. It is recommended that we keep an eye on these patterns and adjust our strategy to take advantage of this tendency. The key here is to observe and adjust bet sizes to maximize value or minimize losses as needed.

Developing a dynamic observation system and patience can be useful tools in these types of cases. Recording and analyzing specific patterns of each novice player (in real-time) allows you to exploit their momentary weaknesses and anticipate their adjustments (however small). The key lies in careful observation and maintaining a balance between exploitation and moderation, avoiding falling into predictable patterns. This perspective not only adds complexity to the game against novice players but also allows us to hone our observation and adaptation skills, which are essential at more advanced levels of play.
