This means that the perceived difficulty difference between a $500 and a $1,000 tournament is greater than the difference between a $19,500 and a $20,000 tournament. - Tournaments with a buy-in below $400 are calculated as if they were $400.
- Tournaments with a buy-in above $20,000 are calculated as if they were $20,000.
- A tournament with a $1,000 buy-in has a base Buy-in Factor of 1.0.
Finishing Factor (quality of the result)
This factor measures how well a player performed within the specific field of their tournament. It is initially calculated by dividing the field size by the player’s finishing position (for example, winning a 100-player tournament yields 100/1 = 100). Again, a logarithmic function is applied to smooth the curve. To handle massive tournaments such as the WSOP Main Event, a maximum of 2,700 players is used for this calculation, regardless of how many actually participate.
Aging Factor (recency of the result)
To reward recent performance and consistency, the GPI applies a time-decreasing multiplier. Results are grouped into six Aging Periods of six months each, covering a total span of three years. A tournament played within the last 6 months has the highest multiplier (a higher score), while one that is between 2.5 and 3 years old has the lowest multiplier.
Final formula and selection of results
The raw score of a tournament is obtained by multiplying the factors mentioned above; however, not all results count. To calculate a player’s total score (GPI Score), the system selects their best performances in each period: for the two most recent periods (last year), the five best results from each of the last six months are considered. For the four previous periods (years 2 and 3), the four best results per six-month period are considered. The sum of the best results (5+5+4+4+4+4) is the final GPI Score. The 300 players with the highest scores each week make up the prestigious GPI Top 300.
