The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, globally known by its acronym PCA, is not just another poker tournament; it is the epicenter where Caribbean luxury meets the intensity of elite competition. Since its inception in the early 2000s, this event has established itself as one of the most prestigious and anticipated stops on the international calendar, rivaling the World Series of Poker (WSOP) itself in importance. Its ability to bring together the world’s top professional players alongside thousands of amateurs dreaming of glory after qualifying online has created a special mystique that only the Bahamas can offer. In this article, we will explore the history, key moments, and significance of this event.

Origins and growth

The history of the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure began in 2004, in a context very different from what we know today. In its inaugural edition, the tournament wasn’t even held on land; it took place aboard a luxury cruise ship, the Voyager of the Seas, which sailed the Caribbean Sea. That first event (with 211 participants) was won by Gus Hansen. Although the numbers were modest by today’s standards, the success was such that PokerStars decided to move the festival to a permanent venue that could house the looming exponential growth: the imposing Atlantis Resort & Casino on Paradise Island. There, the number of participants doubled (reaching 461), and Britain’s John Gale became the new champion. This change marked the beginning of a 15-year relationship that would define the tournament’s identity.

Starting in 2005, the PCA became PokerStars’ flagship event outside of Europe. For years, it was part of the prestigious World Poker Tour (WPT) and later became the crown jewel of the European Poker Tour (EPT) due to the massive influx of European players. The tournament grew unstoppably, driven by the online “poker boom,” allowing players from all over the world to win full packages for just a few dollars through satellites on the platform. By 2009, the event was already awarding massive prizes, such as the $3 million taken home by Canadian Poorya Nazari.

The Bahamas and the Atlantis Resort

Unlike the dark, enclosed casinos of Las Vegas or the cold European capitals in winter, the PCA offers a distinct sensory experience. The Atlantis Resort, with its fantastical architecture, giant aquariums, and water parks, provides a dream vacation backdrop. This combination of sun, beach, and high-level poker attracts not only professionals seeking profit but also high-net-worth recreational players who see the PCA as the perfect opportunity to enjoy their hobby in a paradisiacal setting.

It is common to see players discussing hands while walking on the sand or relaxing in the resort’s pools before heading in to play a $100,000 Super High Roller. This duality between absolute relaxation and tension at the tables is what has defined the PCA brand for decades. Even when the festival moved to the Baha Mar resort in 2023, the essence of the Bahamas remained intact.

The PokerStars Players Championship (PSPC)

In 2019, PokerStars raised the stakes at the PCA by creating the PokerStars Players Championship (PSPC). This tournament revolutionized the industry by combining a massive $25,000 buy-in with the free distribution of hundreds of “Platinum Passes.” These passes, valued at $30,000 each, allowed casual players to compete “toe-to-toe” with top professionals. The result was the largest $25k tournament in history, with a prize pool exceeding $26 million.

The victory of Spaniard Ramón Colillas in that inaugural PSPC edition is arguably the greatest milestone in modern poker. Colillas, who earned his entry for free after winning a tournament ranking in Spain, outlasted a field of 1,039 players to take home a $5.1 million prize. This event not only revitalized interest in the PCA but also reaffirmed the idea that in poker—under the Bahamian sun—anyone with talent (and a bit of luck) can reach the top of the industry.

Impact of the PCA on the Hispanic poker community

For the Spanish-speaking community, the PCA has historically been a land of great conquests. Beyond Ramón Colillas’ feat in 2019, players from Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, and Spain have left an indelible mark on the Bahamas. For many Latin American players, the PCA is the most accessible and attractive international stop due to its geographic proximity and familiarity with the Caribbean environment. The presence of figures like Nacho Barbero or Leo Fernández at final tables has inspired thousands of young people in the region to turn professional in this competitive discipline.

The festival also serves as a cultural meeting point. Welcome parties, “beach soccer” tournaments organized by PokerStars, and gala dinners allow the community to strengthen bonds beyond the cards. In a game that can often be solitary and screen-focused, the PCA provides the social component, reminding us that poker is, above all, a human activity grounded in interaction and psychology.

How to qualify and participate

Participating in the PCA is the goal for many players starting out on PokerStars. The most common way to reach this event is through online satellites, which begin months in advance. These qualifiers allow players to win a full package, which usually includes the Main Event entry, luxury hotel accommodation, travel expense money, and access to exclusive activities. This method has allowed the PCA to keep its player fields large and diverse, mixing the experience of veterans with the “hunger for success” of online qualifiers.

For those who decide to travel on their own, planning ahead is essential. Accommodation on Paradise Island can be expensive during tournament dates, so many players choose to share rooms or look for options in nearby Nassau. However, the experience of staying at the tournament resort itself is unmatched, as it keeps you just steps away from the card room and fully immersed in the festival’s intensity.

A Hiatus and a Triumphant Rebirth

Following a successful 2019 edition won by David “Chino” Rheem, PokerStars announced that the PCA would be discontinued in 2020. The poker world received the news with disappointment, assuming a glorious chapter had come to an end. However, in April 2022, an announcement revitalized the community: the PCA would return in 2023. Not only that, but it would do so with an iconic change of scenery. After 15 years at Atlantis, the festival moved to the modern, luxurious Baha Mar Resort in Nassau. The 2023 return was a success, proving the PCA’s magic was intact. Michel Dattani was crowned Main Event champion, outlasting 889 players, while in the high-stakes tournaments, Isaac Haxton and Sam Greenwood (the latter with a notable performance in the $250,000 event) took home victories.

The return of the PCA in 2023 reaffirmed its status as a “crown jewel” within the PokerStars Live circuit. PokerStars Live is the umbrella for all the brand’s live tournaments globally, including the European Poker Tour (EPT), the Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP), and the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT), among others. The PCA, with its unique location and history, holds a special place in this ecosystem, attracting an international audience eager to combine a vacation with high-level poker.
