How do professional players prepare for a poker tournament?

Preparation for a poker tournament goes beyond card combinations and strategies. Advanced or professional players know that success depends not only on their skill in the game, but also on a comprehensive preparation that encompasses body, mind and spirit. In fact, people who aspire to become professional poker players tend to take a more holistic approach to excel at the gaming table.

Physical endurance and mental clarity

A poker tournament can last several hours or even days, requiring significant physical and mental stamina. Professional players, therefore, incorporate exercises into their routines: running, walking, endurance training, playing a sport, among others, to ensure that their body is prepared for the long competitive sessions.

Another important point in this aspect is sleep and rest. Sleeping well before a tournament ensures that the player’s decisions will not be affected by fatigue, since a small mistake could be devastating in a critical game.

Sleep is a fundamental factor in competitive performance. Its importance lies in several key aspects for the organism such as: physical recovery, improvement of cognitive functions, improvement of coordination and reflexes, hormonal regulation, among others.

Proper nutrition is another vital element for many professional players. Consuming foods that enhance concentration, such as nuts, fruits and fish, helps to maintain focus during intense hours of competition. On the other hand, consuming certain foods such as fats, fried foods, excess sugar, processed foods and alcohol can end up lowering our energy levels and affect mental performance.

In the case of online poker, there are other additional factors to take into account, for example, having a good chair, correct lighting and a comfortable environment, will help us to take care of our posture and eyesight, besides making us feel more comfortable, which will end up affecting (in a positive way) our performance as competitive players.

Mental focus: visualization and mindfulness

Many professional poker players practice visualization before participating in a tournament or championship. They imagine different situations in the game and how they would respond in each of them, as well as visualizing themselves winning and giving their best effort. In fact, some players also complement this practice with mindfulness techniques, which allow them to remain calm and improve their focus, some examples of these techniques/practices are yoga, conscious breathing and meditation.

It is important to keep in mind that it is not enough to be calm in a poker game, but the player must also avoid frustration and mental confusion (tilt). Losing an important hand or facing a bad streak can emotionally destabilize any player. However, professional players have different methods to control their emotions: from techniques that can be performed in the same game such as breathing exercises, taking a break, not taking things personally and visualizing a positive outcome, to previous actions such as keeping an emotional diary to identify negative patterns, exercising and resting well the night before.

In some cases, professional players turn to specialized coaches to work on managing their emotions, as in some cases, guidance and deeper work is required to achieve this goal, since in poker, emotions can be the worst enemy of any player.

Constantly evolving strategies

It is important to implement strategies appropriate to each moment and playing environment. An amateur player might not notice the difference between a cash game strategy and a tournament strategy, but a professional player knows that they are two different worlds. In tournaments, chip management is key, and professionals adapt their style of play according to the stage of the tournament they are in. For example, a Tight (Tight Aggressive) strategy in the early stage can help them conserve chips, while a Loose (Loose Aggressive) approach can be ideal in later stages of the game.

Another point to keep in mind is the metagame at a poker room or poker table, which consists in understanding how players behave in a specific environment: from the type of game or room, to the characteristics of each player, which allows the player to adapt and be “one step ahead” of the other players.

The importance of the online environment

When playing in an online tournament, technological preparation is key. Having a stable internet connection is non-negotiable, however, serious players go a step further, for example, they use high-performance equipment (computers with multiple monitors) to better manage each table and make sure they do not miss any opportunity. In addition, security is a crucial issue, as for example, many players protect their data with specialized software, since in the world of online poker, privacy and anonymity can be as important as a good play.

Balance between preparation and personal life

It is important to keep in mind that outstanding professional players tend to balance their personal life with their professional playing career. If in addition to preparing, the person also dedicates time to his or her personal life and has solid emotional, family or social relationships, then he or she will be much more stable (both mentally and emotionally), which has an impact on a better performance during a game or tournament.
