Early years

Legal Problems and the Mafia
Binion’s beginnings were somewhat murky. According to FBI files, Binion’s criminal history dates back to 1924. His rap sheet includes crimes such as illegal moonshine production, robbery, illegal possession of weapons, and two murder convictions.
By the 1940s, Binion had become the reigning mob boss in Dallas. However, after World War II, the Chicago mob made its successful foray into Dallas. Binion lost his arrangements with the local government after the 1946 election and fled to Las Vegas.
Binion’s Horseshoe Casino
While in Las Vegas, Benny Binion became a member of the Las Vegas Club casino. However, after a year, he withdrew due to disagreements with his partners over gambling limits. Later, in 1951, Benny bought the building that had previously housed the Las Vegas Club and opened it as the Westerner Gambling House and Saloon.

Binion’s greatest contribution to poker was creating the World Series of Poker (WSOP). In 1970, he hosted the first WSOP at his casino in Las Vegas, inviting the likes of Johnny Moss, Amarillo Slim, and Doyle Brunson.
This first event was not a regular tournament but a series of cash games culminating in a vote to determine the best player. Johnny Moss became the first WSOP champion, starting a tradition still alive.
The WSOP format changed rapidly in 1971 when Amarillo Slim proposed the direct elimination tournament, the famous “freeze-out.” This innovation revolutionized the competition, establishing a format that remains today. After Benny died in 1989, his son Jack Binion took over the organization’s reins, ensuring that the World Series of Poker (WSOP) continued to grow. Under his leadership, the event not only grew in size but also in prestige. The Binion family succeeded in making the WSOP a must-attend event for poker lovers, cementing its status as the most prestigious tournament in the world.
